Don't give power to the problem

In the English language, the two most powerful words together are "I am."

How many times a day do you think, "I am" followed by a negative thought? I can almost guarantee it's more times than positive ones.

When it comes to our health goals, those words carry so much weight and can greatly impact our motivation, dedication and will-power. For example, if you're trying to cut back on sweets but you're constantly thinking "I love sugar", "I can't control myself around sweets," or "I have a sweet tooth" it's like you're giving yourself an excuse to eat all the sugar you want. You also might be assuming something that actually isn't true, while falling into a habit of having ice cream every night.

Rather, change these two words to "I choose." Do you feel a difference in your mind when you say "I choose to have sweets every night"? Personally, I find it to be a huge relief because it gives me back my power. You can choose to have dessert every day or you can choose not to - but the decision is YOURS. Another common experssion is "I need a drink." Or, "I need a glass of wine to unwind every night." But if you say "I choose to have a drink every night" instead, it gives you instant freedom from the label you unintentionally assigned to yourself.

As a society, we're becoming more and more accustomed (even addicted) to instant gratification. In the world of social media, google, texting, etc....we're not used to waiting for pleasure. But if you think about it, instant gratification is not actually real. It's just quick, convenient choices that make us feel good in the moment. The pleasure is fleeting.

On the other hand, long-term gratification comes from making choices that might not feel easy right away, but provide so many more benefits in the long run. Imagine you choose to reserve your wine to the weekends? It might feel hard to get out of that habit, but once you notice your sleep improving, stubborn weight falling off, anxiety and mental clarity improving, you'll likely feel so much better. As a result, you'll feel more in control over your life, and maybe even decide to have it on special occasions only!
